Cabot Lodge is located on the boundary of the Fiordland National Park, Lake Manapouri and the Waiau River, only 5 minutes from the departure point for Doubtful Sound, 10 minutes from the Kepler Track (one of New Zealand’s ten Great Walks) and 20 minutes from the stunning Milford Road, leading to Milford Sound, the Routeburn Track and Milford Track.
Cabot Lodge has direct access to the Waiau River, boasting a private jetty from which guests can enjoy the area’s renowned trout fishing, be picked up for a jetboat adventure, or even take to the skies on the local float plane.
Stargazing at Cabot Lodge
The Lodge is located on the boundary of the Fiordland National Park on a 2000 acre farm, thus we have zero light pollution. Fiordland is becoming a Dark Sky Sanctuary (NZ’s third with Tekapo and Stewart Island). We have overhauled our exterior lighting at the Lodge to ensure that guests are able to stargaze without interruption, and we have binoculars available in each suite for guests to use, as well as detailed charts on our night sky available for guests in the Lodge library.

Dining at Cabot Lodge
Cabot Lodge presents an authentic New Zealand dining experience where each dish tells a unique tale. Fresh produce, including fruits and vegetables harvested on-site, Blue Cod sourced directly from the Sounds, venison from Fiordland’s hills, lamb from Southland’s lush paddocks, and salmon raised nearby on Stewart Island, imbue every meal with a distinctive narrative.
For breakfast, Cabot Lodge offers a continental spread featuring homemade breads, pastries, chia cups, muesli, fresh fruit, nuts, yogurts, and an extensive selection of juices, teas, and coffees. Additionally, guests can choose from a cooked breakfast menu, which includes delightful options such as grilled banana pancakes, a BLT bagel, or a hearty full farmers breakfast with venison sausage, bacon, grilled tomato, mushroom, and eggs.
Lunch options at the Lodge encompass a ploughman’s style presentation, available either within the Lodge or as a picnic for Fiordland explorations. This lunch consists of made-to-order sandwiches, a variety of cheeses and crackers, accompanied by nuts, fresh fruit, and a homemade sweet slice.
Fiordland Luxury Farmstay
Cabot Lodge is situated on 2,000 acres of farmland bordering the Fiordland National Park, a renowned World Heritage Site.
The farm is home to over 7,000 animals with sheep, deer, cattle, beehives and two miniature horses. Guests are given the opportunity to take part in and experience New Zealand farming life, feeding our horses and pet sheep, exploring the art of beekeeping, joining 4WD tours of the property to learn about sustainable farming techniques, and watching the Lodge’s staff member, Sam the sheep dog, in action.
There are a number of walks for guests of all fitness levels to enjoy while on the property. Guests can climb to the highest peak of the farm for breathtaking views, or wander down to the secluded jetty on the peaceful Waiau River for a romantic picnic or a spot of fishing.
