To the north lie treasures like Kahurangi National Park, the mesmerizing Heaphy Track, and the enchanting Oparara Valley boasting its remarkable Limestone Arches and Honeycomb Caves.
Heading south, one can explore the captivating Charming Creek Walkway, the historic Denniston Plateau, the lively Cape Foulwind Seal Colony, and the iconic Punakaiki Pancake Rocks.

Choose to have a hot tub delivered and set up at your holiday accommodation in Gentle Annie or enjoy a 2-hour session at the camping ground with the Nikau and Flax Hot Tubs.
Purpose-built platforms ensure you have the ultimate experience in your private, opulent, wood-fired soak.
Unwind and take in the breathtaking views of the ocean and beyond, bask in the beauty of sunsets, stargaze at the night sky, all while surrounded by the lush nikau bush of Gentle Annie.
Each hot tub comfortably accommodates 4-6 people, and firewood is conveniently provided on site.

We offer 5 self-contained holiday homes, sleeping from 1 to 27 people for group accommodation.
Rata Lodge (Sleeps 1–27)
The Rata Lodge is situated on an elevated site overlooking the tidal estuary and river meeting the Tasman Sea. The decks off of each bedroom offers a great site to watch the famous West Coast sunsets and twilights. The spacious, equipped, open-plan kitchen, living and dining room with wood-burning fireplace, face a backdrop of native forest clad hillside.
Riverview Home (Sleeps 1–10)
The Riverview Home is on an elevated natural site overlooking the Mokihinui River and Buller Bay coastline with a picturesque backdrop of subtropical native forest. The house offers a well equipped kitchen with a large central living area, comfortably furnished. A wood-burning fireplace adds to the warm atmosphere. The beach and river can be reached by foot within five minutes. When used in conjunction with the nearby Rata Lodge it is an ideal venue for group gatherings such as family occasions, corporate retreats, weddings etc.
Cabbage Tree Cottage (Sleeps 1–6)
A two storey ‘woodsy’ beachfront home on an elevated site from which views of the Coast, Nikau and Rata forest can be enjoyed in the open plan living/kitchen area. The balcony puts you right amongst the natural scenery as does the courtyard with its open fire place for outdoor leisure.
Beach Cabin (Sleeps 1–8)
The Beach Cabin, nestled below the subtropical forest, has a view of the sea with only a minutes walk to the beach. Its private, sheltered location makes it a great place to relax and get away from it all. The open plan lounge/kitchen/dining is comfortably furnished and well equipped.
Rimu House (Sleeps 1–9)
The Rimu House, named after the beautiful wood it is made of, is a very comfortable home with a view. A fully equipped kitchen, and open plan style living room opens out onto a large deck putting you amongst the surrounding native virgin forest and offers spectacular views of the Tasman Sea, which is a stones throw away. A perfect spot to watch the local Hector dolphins which are often seen playing in the waves.
Cabins with Shared Facilities
The Treehouse (Sleeps 1-4). A two-bedroom unit situated upstairs in a building in the camping ground next door to the Cowshed, nearby to all facilities that are shared with the campers (toilets, hot showers, small kitchen, “The Cowshed” lounge area with free WiFi, lawns and gardens). Both bedrooms have beautiful views of the beach, the Mokihinui river mouth, the camping ground and gardens, and New Zealand Native Bush.
The Cheeky Weka Cabin (Sleeps 1-2). The “Cheeky Weka” Cabin is a beautiful bedroom located in the camping ground a few hundred metres away from the Beach. The bedroom features a handmade queen bed, and a breakfast bar to enjoy your morning coffee. Please note the bedroom is unpowered. Battery-powered lanterns provide light. Cheeky Weka Cabin guests share a simple kitchen, bathroom and toilet facilities with the camping ground guests. The Cowshed lounge building, which is open day and night, and has free WiFi inside, also has power sockets for you to charge small appliances.
Camp Ground Mokihinui River
Gentle Annie has a beautiful camping ground at the mouth of the Mokihinui River. Sheltered and private camping sites are set amongst landscaped gardens, all within a couple minutes walk to the river and beach. Dogs are welcome, as long as they are kept with their owners at all times, are cleaned up after, and you are aware that there is roaming native birdlife to protect.
We are also part of the NZMCA All-year Round CampSaver programme. To get these discounted prices (25% on powered campsites only), all you need to do is turn up (no pre-booking required, and the discount is not available online due to our booking engine capabilities). These are only available during the NZMCA set time periods, Excludes 21st 21st December 2024 – 7th February 2025, and Easter Weekend.
Cowshed Coffee Shop
Centrally located at Gentle Annie is New Zealand’s only coffee shop situated in a once operating milking shed. Situated facing the sea, surrounded by gardens and grassy play areas, eating is enjoyed either outdoors or indoors in a lovingly restored shed with local timbers and a fish pond set amongst ferns. The Cowshed coffee shop is open daily from 9am-6pm during the Summer (longer over Peak periods), and has limited hours throughout the rest of the year.
