Walter Peak Farm
Nestled on the western shores of Lake Wakatipu, Walter Peak High Country Farm is rich in history. Its sheltered bays once served as campsites for Māori travellers on their journeys to the Mararoa and Oreti Rivers, where they hunted moa and gathered pounamu (greenstone).
European settlement began in the 1860s when Von Tunzelman made the first farming attempts. However, harsh conditions, including severe snowstorms and financial struggles, forced him to abandon the land.
In the late 1880s, the Mackenzie family took over Walter Peak Station and spent the next 80 years shaping it into one of New Zealand’s most renowned high-country farms. At its height, the station covered 170,000 acres, ran 40,000 sheep, and employed up to 50 full-time workers.
The original homestead block of Walter Peak Station is now known as Walter Peak High Country Farm. Over time, several homes were built on the property, including the Colonel’s Homestead, with its stunning lakeside gardens. Originally built in 1902, it was carefully rebuilt in 1977 after an accidental fire.
