Whakarewarewa Legacy Guided Village Tour
Enjoy our Legacy guided tour and home of the Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao people who have been sharing their way of life with visitors from all around the world for over 200 years. Discover how our people have adopted and survived to live on top of a caldera, a truly intrepid human journey since the devastating eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886.

Cooked in the bubbling geothermal waters and steam of Whakarewarewa Valley, the hangi offers a unique and delicious taste. For a modern twist on this traditional meal, try our world-famous hangi pie—a truly unique Kiwi culinary delight!
Whaka Geothermal Trails
Our new geothermal nature trails provide exclusive access to an untouched geothermal landscape where Visitors can experience the raw nature of Papatuanuku (mother-earth). The Jurassic park-like landscape are described as providing regenerative powers as you find yourself face-to-face with Nature, Hot Spring Lakes, Mud Pools and native manuka bushlands. Please note that there is no access to Pohutu Geyser on our Geothermal Trails.
Our Whaka Geothermal Walking Trails were introduced as a new visitor experience in 2020 and have proved to be a very popular way to enjoy the natural surrounds of Whakarewarewa on foot. To take that exploration to the next level, we have teamed up with Electric Bike Rentals Rotorua to offer an exclusive Whaka E-Bike Hire & Trails experience on two wheels, into previously non-accessible areas of the Reserve!
This is an ideal outdoor leisurely adventure for families, couples, and small groups of up to 10 people, and for all levels of fitness. Kids can ride independently or on a dual-carry E-bike.
All Day Pass to Whakarewarewa
Our All-Day Pass gives you, our guests the opportunity to experience everything Geothermal & Māori Cultural at Rotorua’s most iconic Living Maori Village, Whakarewarewa.
You will join one of our Iconic Village Guided Tours at either 9am, 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm or 3pm. Attend our daily cultural performance at 12.30pm and spend as much time as you desire exploring our self-guided Geothermal Trails. An experience ideal for the entire family with views of the mighty Pohutu Geyser and tasting corn cooked in our largest hot pool, being just a couple of highlights on our village guided tour, to joining in with audience participation at our cultural performance and taking a leisurely stroll through the untouched landscape that is our Geothermal Trails.
Geyser Café Rotorua
Located in our admissions building Nga Mareikura, Geyser Cafe has something for everyone, only at Whakarewarewa – Living Maori Village.
Try our Geothermal Hangi Meals that have been cooked in the hot pool and steam vents you can see within our village.
Specialty only at Whaka – our world famous Hangi Pies are always ready to eat hot from the oven and come in a selection of 3 flavors – Chicken, Beef or Vege.
Geyser Café can be accessed by all visitors to Whakarewarewa without purchasing a ticket into the village.
We have a selection of cabinet foods infused with Maori herbs & spices, homemade sweet treats, beautiful barista’s serving delicious INCA coffee and so much more.
Guided Geothermal ECO Tour
Only available on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s, our guided geothermal ECO tour provides exclusive access to an untouched geothermal landscape, where our guide will interpret the land, plants, animals and nature of this rare environment.
Departing at 9.30am, our ECO tour brings together a mātauranga Māori kaupapa (Māori knowledge framework) with modern science, to share knowledge spanning earth sciences, ecology, biodiversity, health, environment and climate change.
Educational Experiences at Whakarewarewa
We accommodate educational groups of all ages and areas of study through Rotorua Education Network. Rotorua Education Network partner with a range of Rotorua businesses, helping schools or groups arrange custom itineraries that suit their educational needs.
