Things to do in Taranaki
The Coastal Walkway – 12.7km’s of smooth pathway, this award-winning track winds around the coast offering great shoreline views. Stretching from Port Taranaki to the eastern side of Bell Block Beach the walkway is perfect for walking, running, biking, and skating.
Drive around the Mt Taranaki – See some of the region’s highlights in one day. Starting from New Plymouth following Surf Highway 45 through to Hawera and then back up SH3. See stunning scenery such as Cape Egmont, sample cheese at Eltham’s cheese shop or take a photo next to Manaia’s giant bread sculpture, catch the Romeo and Juliette show at Stratfords Glockenspiel or visit Envirofur for quality NZ possum products.
Visit the Three Sisters of Tongaporutu – The Three Sisters rock formations can be seen at low tide when you can walk along the river and around the point for best viewing. In the nearby caves, you can see M?ori petroglyphs carved into cave rock walls. Be sure to check the tides as the formations are only accessible during low tide.
New Plymouth – In the heart of New Plymouth city is one of New Zealand’s premier botanic gardens, Pukekura Park, established in 1938, a great place for walking, picnics and music concerts in summer. Visit Brooklands Zoo a small animal zoo with free entry. The deep waters and predominant westerly wind of this exposed coast often cause large waves, making this region a celebrated surfing location. The deep water also presents an abundance of fish species that can be caught on charter fishing trips.
Go the one of the many Beaches – Taranaki has so many beaches to explore. Being on the West Coast the waves can get big making them ideal for surfing and boogie boarding. Some of the great beaches to see are Ahu Ahu Beach, Oakura Beach, Back Beach, Fitzroy Beach, Ngamotu Beach (popular swimming spot) and Urenui Beach, ideal for swimming, boating and fishing.
Play Golf – The Taranaki region has about 20 golf courses, ranging from rural 9-hole courses, where sheep are to be found grazing on fairways, to premium 18-hole courses.
Go Swimming – Take the family for a fun-filled day out at Todd Energy Aquatic Centre. With indoor and outdoor pools, hydroslides, sauna and spa, there is something for everyone.
Explore the Rock Pools – Check out the sea life at Kawaroa Reef. Perfect for families with young children, have fun exploring the rock pools and see crabs, snails, and more.
Rotokare Scenic Reserve – Home to hundreds of native plants and threatened wildlife species. This picturesque bush-clad catchment has extensive wetlands and 17 ha natural lake. Enjoy kayaking on the lake, perch fishing (by permit), swimming or a walk along the accessable wetland boardwalk.
